There are many fun and exciting things to do in Eldoret that will keep you busy and in an exploration mood.

If you are someone like me who likes wandering to new locations and exploring them, this beautiful town has so much to offer, you have to know where to look.

I have lived in Eldoret since 2019 when I first started pursuing a mechanical engineering course at Eldoret National Polytechnic.

The entire journey of traveling around Kenya, started when I came to Eldoret.

It’s the first town I managed to explore to the fullest even before my hometown Mombasa.

As I have been living in Eldoret, I have traveled to almost every part of Uasin Gishu County searching for adventures.

In this article, I will share with you some of the best things to do when you are in Eldoret.

Some activities will take you out of Eldoret Town but most of them will just be within town.

Best things to do in Eldoret;

1. Explore Eldoret Town.

Buildings in Eldoret Town

The first thing you should do whenever you visit any location — is explore the town center.

If you want to learn anything about how the locals handle themselves and welcome the visitors in their hometown, this is where you will get an idea of how the people behave.

It’s very hard for people within the town, markets, and the streets to hide their true characters.

So, before you think of doing anything else, take your time to move around Eldoret Town to familiarize yourself with the streets.

In most of the trips that you will be going on, some will require you to first be in town to find a means of transport that is going to take you where you are going.

Eldoret Town isn’t that big like Nairobi, it’s easier to move around — so you don’t have to get worried thinking that you are going to get lost in the streets.

When exploring Eldoret Town you can walk around the market areas, prominent streets like Kayellow (one of the busiest streets), around Khetias CBD, and Get to Nandi Road to see the Indian temples along that road.

As you are exploring the town you can also get to buy anything you want just to keep yourself ready for the adventure of a few days you are going to have here.

It’s in town where you will get access to almost all the services you may think of.

So, if you need to withdraw some cash, find some jackets and some hiking shoes — while walking around the town you should keep your eyes open for these things.

You can also go further to Westie Market which is a few metres away from the Khetias Highland.

That’s where you will find second-hand clothes and shoes of any kind being sold.

2. Visit Koromosho Falls.

The Koromosho Falls in Eldoret

One of the best things to do in Eldoret is connect with nature since this incredible town offers more of that.

Koromosho Falls is a thrilling piece of nature you should visit if you want to enjoy an incredible view of the fall and the river flowing from it.

Also, you will get a chance to hike around the falls and descend the rocks just to get to the bottom of the fall.

Koromosho Falls is one of the amazing spots you will explore in Eldoret and enjoy your time even when the water levels in the rivers are low.

When it’s not raining and the rivers are pretty dry some of the falls like Chepkiit are uninteresting to see, which I will talk about as we keep going deeper and show the view of the fall when I visited it in March, the fall is just not incredible.

I visited Koromosho and Chepkiit Falls at the same time frame which was around March.

Koromosho Falls was just blazing with water and the view was just incredible compared to what I saw in Chepkiit.

It doesn’t matter the time of the year you visit Koromosho Falls, you won’t be disappointed.

You can walk around the falls, chill beside the river bank, watch the water flow down the fall, descend via the rocks to get to the bottom of the fall, and enjoy some incredible views.

When you are at the top, you can get to have a clear view of river Sosiani flowing from the falls.

Most of the areas around the falls are just green forests.

You can take some photos and videos to capture the amazing scene of the falls.

If you are planning to descend to the bottom of the falls ensure you have good hiking shoes.

The area going down is a little bit tricky since there is no clear route to walk down there.

You will just have to squeeze yourself through the rocks, and carefully step from one point to another to get down.

Once you get down the fall you will realize all the effort you put to get down there was worth it.

The moment you get to the bottom you can explore the river a little but be careful of where you step.

The waterway can be super slippery and dangerous especially when the river is flooded during the rainy season.

To get inside the Koromosho Falls you have to pay an entrance fee of Ksh 100.

3. Explore River Kipkaren.

I told you earlier that now that you are in Eldoret, it’s just time for you to connect with nature.

What better place to do that than in this incredible town?

The next thing you should do is explore the river Kipkaren even before you think of going to Chepkiit.

The section of the river I encourage you to explore is the one that is just around Chekpkiit.

Before you reach Chepkiit Falls you will come across the river that is full of dark pebble stones which offers an incredible view that will just blow your mind.

Sometimes you will find the locals washing their clothes around the river or herding their livestock to drink water by the river.

When you head north of the river (the opposite side where the river flows to the Chepkiit Falls) you will see beautiful rock landscapes.

The sound of the water flowing, the clear skies, and the trees around the area just make this location feel like a paradise.

It’s one of the best rivers I have seen while exploring Uasin Gishu.

To get to River Kipkaren, you will have to take a public means of transport if you don’t have a car.

In my case, I took a matatu from Eldoret Town to Nandi County which was 35 minutes drive. You will be dropped off at the Mlango shopping center.

From there you can take a boda boda ride which only cost Ksh 50 to Chepkiit Falls.

You won’t completely be taken inside the d falls, they will drop you at the point that leads to the falls.

When you are walking down getting to the route that connects you to the falls, that is when you will see the section of River Kipkaren you should explore.

It’s completely free to explore the river since you aren’t at the falls yet.

4. Head to Chepkiit Falls (Mlango Water Falls).

Chepkiit water falls during dry season - this is how it looks like

The view point of Chepkiit water falls

After you are done exploring the river that connects to the falls you should head to Chepkiit Falls (Mlango Water Falls).

The first time I went to the falls I came across a guy who took me to the falls via unofficial route.

The guy had good intentions but he only wanted to get cash I was supposed to pay at the entrance.

He showed me another beaten path to take, I didn’t enter the falls via the official gate — I entered via a broken side of the fence then I had to pay him Ksh 100 that was back in March 2023.

But right now things may be a little bit different. You may not have the opportunity I had so you will have to assume that you will follow the official channel.

You will have to pay an entrance fee of Ksh 200 to get access to the falls and the entire hiking grounds.

When I first visited the falls I was just blown away by how incredible the area was.

They have thatched shades around where the river Kipkaren flows to the falls. You can walk around the river inlet to the falls as you watch the water flow.

There is a viewpoint where you can stand to see and capture the waterfall at the top if you are not planning to go down.

The view at the top is incredible, it feels like you are at the top of the hill.

The areas surrounding the falls are just forests. From the top of the viewpoint, you can see where the river flows from the falls.

If you are done capturing and seeing the falls from the top, you can head down the falls to get an even a more closer view.

For that, you will have to check out where the stairs are to descend.

You will see people heading down the falls via the stairs that are built even before you reach the viewpoint.

If you are done enjoying the view of the falls, you can hike down the fall via another route that is on the other side of the stairs.

Climb up the stairs and move forward as if you are walking away from the falls, you will see another route around the fence.

That’s the route I used to hike down to the falls to get to the water flowing from the falls.

The path going down is unclear so you will have to check where you are going, you don’t want to get lost in those woods.

It’s an adventure indeed, I got my adrenaline high just descending to the river.

Down the river, it was just super calm and scenic. It’s just worth the trouble you will go through to get down there.

5. See animals at Poa Place Resort.

Another best thing to do in Eldoret is to see wild animals at Poa Place Resort.

Poa Place Resort has a lot to offer — it’s not just all about fancy restaurants and hotels that you can’t afford.

The first time I visited Poa Place I thought I couldn’t afford a ticket to see the animals and the cultural center.

The resort seems so established and if you are traveling on a budget, when you look at their websites, you might feel that you can’t even afford to enter the resort.

When you enter the park there are different areas you can explore, they all have different rates.

The first time I visited the resort I spent my time walking around first to get to see how everything was.

I saw lots of cottages there, an amusement park, a swimming pool, a spa, a bar, and fancy restaurants.

It is always a good idea to explore a place so that you know of any services you can get there maybe if you want to revisit the place in the future.

At Poa Place Resort they have animal shelters where you get to see different types of animals.

That’s the section on nature and culture which is just at the left side of the entrance.

You will get to a reception office where you will pay for your ticket to get inside the animal shelter.

To enter the nature and culture side you will have to pay Ksh 150 for an adult citizen, and Ksh 100 for a child, while an adult foreigner pays Ksh 400 and a child’s fee is Ksh 200.

Before you enter the animal shelter the security guard will have to inspect your bed to ensure that you don’t carry food inside.

You aren’t allowed to feed the animals in the shelter.

These are the animals you should expect to see;

  • Monkeys.
  • Baboons.
  • Tortoises.
  • Crocodiles.
  • Peacocks.
  • Snakes.
  • Lions.
  • Hyena.
  • Ostriches.
  • Birds.
  • Lizards.

The animal side is quite amazing than any other animal parks I have been to.

At Poa Place Resort they have a collection of so many animals that I saw compared to Haller Park in Mombasa.

Apart from seeing the animals, you will also come across the cultural side of things — mostly it involves traditional buildings of different tribes in Kenya.

These are some of the traditional houses you will see at Poa Place Resort on the cultural side;

  • Marakwet Traditional Homestead.
  • Nandi Traditional homestead.
  • Kikuyu traditional homestead.
  • Pokot Traditional Homestead.
  • Maasai traditional homestead.

So, you will get to see a lot and learn so much about the culture of different tribes in Kenya.

So far, exploring the nature and cultural center at Poa Place Resort was one of the best things while traveling in Eldoret.

I saw the biggest snake ever in my life and a lion for the first time at this resort.

So, it’s worth a visit when you are in Eldoret.

Poa Place Resort is along Malaba Road just close to the Eldoret City Of Champions Monument.

6. Enjoy a day out at Lobo Village.

Enjoying a day out at Lobo Village in Eldoret with a friend

Lobo Village view around the artificial lake

If you are within Eldoret and you are wondering where you should spend your day and do so many exciting activities, you should head to Lobo Village.

Lobo Village is just an incredible hang-out spot in Eldoret that has a lot to offer — enough to occupy your entire day.

The amazing thing is that you don’t have to pay an entrance fee to get to Lobo Village.

But here is the catch, they know that you are likely going to spend money at this spot because of the activities you will want to engage in and the meals you would like to try.

If you want to have the entire place to yourself, you should visit Lobo Village during the weekdays.

On the weekends the place is crowded and noisy compared to the weekdays.

The area is large enough for you to stretch your legs, a lots of designated sitting areas, amazing shades, umbrellas, and chairs.

Lobo Village continues to get better each day. I was blown away by how the place has transformed in my recent visit (2024 February).

There are lots of incredible places to take photos, and fancy setups that can make someone think you are really at an expensive retreat somewhere.

The views of the place are just breathtaking, the meals they offer are incredible and you can just spend hours watching football since they have a big TV screen there.

I used to go to Lobo Village to chill and clear my head after long hours of studying thermodynamic equations.

It’s a great spot to spend your day with friends, family, or partner.

You can ride horses at Lobo Village, ride a boat, and try horse riding if you have never done it before — lucky me, I did that at Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa.

There are other sports like archery and some that I couldn’t even identify.

Lobo Village is just within Eldoret around the Kapsaret flyover along the A8 North Road.

It’s one of the highly rated hang-out spots in Eldoret that is worth it to explore.

7. Ride a boat at Kesses Dam.

People about to start boat riding at Kesses Dam in Eldoret

The next thing you should add your to do list in Eldoret is boat riding at Kesses Dam.

Kesses Dam is another incredible location you should explore within Eldoret.

It’s a man-made dam that was purposely made to retain water for irrigation but the locals thought it would be better to also turn it into a recreational location.

Before we even think of getting into boat riding at Kesses Dam, let me describe for you what captured my attention at this location.

The first thing is that the environment around the dam is super clean. The air is so fresh since you are a few kilometers away from the main roads.

There are so many trees around the area making the area super chilly and calm.

You can only hear the birds chirping. There are wide green grounds where you can set up your sitting point.

For these features, it’s one of the best hang-out places you can think of in Eldoret.

The views and atmosphere are just something else. Some people go to Kesses Dam to chill with their friends and family.

Some go there to swim, fish, for the view, and enjoy boat riding.

You can enjoy all these when you put Kesses Dam on your to-do list when you are in Uasin Gishu County.

The time I visited Kesses Dam, I paid Ksh 20 for the entrance fee which was very cheap considering what the area had to offer.

When it comes to boat riding, the prices aren’t fixed, you just have to be good at negotiating if you want to get the best price.

Kesses Dam is quite far from Eldoret town, it’s about a 50-minute drive.

If you decide to use a matatu you are likely to spend about Ksh 500 the entire trip if you will be within Eldoret Town.

Tip: Ensure you carry your snacks and drinks so that once you are within the area you won’t have to go out again until you are done for the day.

8. Eat freshwater fish at Eastleigh.

With this next activity, I am taking you back to Eldoret Town.

There is an area called Eastleigh just around Kitale stage in Eldoret Town.

For me, a trip won’t be enough until I try some street foods and dishes from the areas I am exploring.

Since I have been living in Mombasa for longer, I hardly come across freshwater fish.

The fish you will try in Mombasa are from the Indian Ocean, which is super different from the ones coming from Lake Victoria.

In Eldoret, you are just 137 kilometers away from Kisumu. Most of the fish that are sold in Eldoret are from there.

If you want to have the chance to try freshwater fish, Eastleigh Fish Market is the spot you should go to.

There are so many fish stalls to choose from and their prices are pretty reasonable.

This is the place where you should go and try the fried fish and salad. If you want to you can add a little bit of Ugali at the top.

What can I say, this is the typical best meal of the locals around this area. Don’t be surprised when you see the area super crowded.

9. Party at Tamasha Lounge.

Outside Tamasha Lounge around the entry in Eldoret

If you are a party person you should consider partying at Tamasha Lounge.

I am not a party person, but I have been lucky enough to see how the entire Tamasha Lounge holds its events.

Tamasha Lounge is located along Eldoret-Kisumu Road just around Eldoret National Polytechnic.

I have been passing outside of Tamasha Lounge many times than I can count.

The hostels I was staying in were just close to the Lounge — during the weekend night, it’s just a disaster.

I was in my room and I could hear everything that was going on at Tamasha Lounge — the music was super loud and people just having fun.

During the weekends, the place is usually super crowded to the extent that some people fail to get parking spaces.

The entire parking area is fully occupied.

People go to Tamasha Lounge to party at night but during the day when there are no loud music and events — it’s just an amazing chilling spot where you can spend your time enjoying your drinks.

There is no entrance fee to enter Tamasha Lounge unless there is an event at the section of sherehe district, that is when people will be charged to enter.

Sometimes the lounge is used to host different events and concerts.

It’s a fun place to be if you are the kind of person who enjoys the partying lifestyle.

10. Explore Sergoit View Gardens.

The hang out and dining shades at Sergoit View Gardens

Sergoit View Gardens is another epic location you should explore that is quite far from Eldoret Town.

From its name, you just know that this is a resort with incredible views and amazing chilling spots.

I went to Sergoit View Gardens to just explore the location but I found more than what I expected and that is why I highly recommend you add it to your bucket list.

The resort is close enough to Sergoit Hill — you get a spectacular view of the hill while dining and chilling there.

I was impressed by my small trip getting there. I first took a matatu heading to Iten from Eldoret Town then alighted at Moiben junction centre.

From the junction, I decided to walk to Sergoit Garden Views not knowing what I was hoping to achieve.

After a few minutes of walking along the beautiful landscapes, I saw the view of Sergoit Hill.

This was one of the most beautiful views I had seen in Eldoret. It was so scenic to see the hill in front of me.

A guy who has been living in Mombasa my entire childhood, this was something new for me.

It was so fulfilling to see the hill and the villages around it. I told myself that that was what I wanted to experience while traveling thus motivated me to travel to more places.

As I was getting closer to Sergoit View Gardens the more beautiful the view of the hill became.

Let me take you back to the Resort itself. The location is just well-kept, there are sheds you can sit on and enjoy your meals, there are many designated sitting areas, and you can play some games around there and enjoy swinging.

When I went to Sergoit View Gardens I had no intention of spending so much time there but I lost it.

I spent hours chilling there while listening to some music since the area was so calm and peaceful.

The Sergoit View Gardens isn’t that big to hike around — if you want to stretch yourself you should get back to the main road.

You will have the view of Sergoit Hill and a long empty road to wander around and enjoy yourself.

They have amazing meals that you should try when you are at Sergoit Resort.

The meals are prepared the moment you order them — this means you have a hot and fresh meal.

I ordered an omelette at Ksh 250 which was just amazing.

Sergoit View Gardens is an amazing location if you want an area to chill, escape the chaos of the city, get amazing meals, and enjoy spectacular views of the landscapes of Uasin Gishu County.

It’s completely free to enter Sergoit View Gardens since they are sure you will have to spend money there — foods and drinks from outside aren’t allowed in.

11. Enjoy a lake breeze at Caesar’s Waterfront Resort.

The view of the lake at Caesar's water front resort

Caesar’s Waterfront Resort is just close to Sergoit View Gardens — you should connect them in a single trip.

You don’t want to miss the incredible view and amazing breeze of Lake Caesar.

The resort is named after the lake in front of it. You will only have to spend a few hundred shillings to get there.

You don’t have to pay an entrance fee to enter the resort but it’s going to be necessary for you to get a drink and a meal at this location.

The location of Caesar’s Waterfront Resort is one of the things that makes it better than most resorts in Uasin Gishu County.

With the lake in front of the resort, you get to see people fishing, others riding boats and the view of the papyrus reeds swaying because of the wind and breeze from the lake.

At Caesar’s restaurant, they have different types of meals you can try but mostly are the fish that are fished from the lake.

There is also a bar where you can sit and have a few drinks while enjoying the view of the lake.

Seats are facing the lake where you can sit and enjoy the breeze. If the breeze is too much for you there are transparent sheds you can occupy to protect yourself from the cold.

12. Go for an adventure to Kolol Riverside Resort.

A tree house offering a view to the river at Kolol Riverside Resort

If you are within Uasin Gishu you should go for an adventure to Kolol Riverside Resort.

You may think that when I say something about a resort it’s all about hotels and restaurants, this is not the case at all.

Kolol Riverside Resort is highly known because of its scenic location and the river passing along the resort.

Apart from that, it has a tree house where you can just chill and watch the river flow from the Two River Dam.

The only thing that took me to Kolol Riverside Resort was the incredible view of the river and the artificial waterfall created around the resort.

I ended up spending more time outside than inside the resort.

This doesn’t mean that the resort doesn’t have anything incredible to offer — there are amazing accommodations you can get at a fair price.

I never stayed for the night but it’s something I am thinking of next when I revisit the place.

What a great way to wake up next to the river flowing and hear the sound of water washing away!

The resort is spacious enough for you to stretch your legs, has amazing grounds to chill, and perfect designated sitting areas.

The washrooms are super clean — I had to get in there though I didn’t book a stay for the night because I was planning to go back to Eldoret Town.

To enter Kolol Riverside Resort you will have to pay Ksh 100 to get the ticket at the gate.

With that ticket, you are free to move around the resort, chill there, and even get into the washrooms when you need to use them.

Do all you can but don’t fail to walk along the river outside the resort, it has some of the incredible views that are out of a documentary film.

The meals and drinks at the resort are quite expensive — I could tell that because of the single bottle of soda I bought at their restaurant.

So, if you are planning to dine there you should roughly have about Ksh 2000 in your pocket.

13. Try the Kalenjin Mursik.

Have you ever heard of Mursik? This is something you should try when you are in Eldoret because you are specifically in the land of the Kalenjin people.

Mursik is a drink made from fermented milk a cow or a goat. The milk is put in a calabash gourd and left there for 3 to 4 days.

After 3 days, the milk will be super thick and it tastes sour. It looks just like yogurt.

Some add charcoal powder to it to add flavor — which is surprising considering that we add sugar to milk to make it tasty.

You can drink mursik just plainly or eat it with ugali.

When you are in Eldoret you will find mursik sold in so many hotels and local spots because Kalenjins can’t eat their meals without including this drink.

Most athletes from Uasin Gishu (home of the champions of the prominent marathon runners from here e.g. Eliud Kipchoge) drink mursik to gain energy.

Apart from that mursik is also considered to be an important cultural drink that elders incorporate during meetings and special occasions.

When Kalenjins welcome their relatives into their land they offer them mursik.

If there are meetings and gatherings of any kind that Involve important discussions, people must drink murski when the agreements are reached.

To you, it may just seem like a plain drink but it means a lot to the Kalenjins in Kenya.

So, when you are in Eldoret this is a drink you should try.

I have been living in Eldoret for more than 3 years, I have drunk it so many times to the extent that it feels like I’m part of this community.

The taste is sour. It’s just like drinking a yoghurt without sugar but a lemon has been added in.

14. Go shopping at Rupa’s Mall.

Rupa’s Mall is an incredible shopping center just a few meters away from Eldoret town.

This is a go-to place if you want to do some shopping and at the same time play around with the elevators.

It’s not that Rupa’s Mall is the only shopping center you have in town, but it has so many things to offer.

You can get many services and products at this mall.

What’s the point of visiting a town without seeing the malls? People go to Rupa’s mall to get coffee, buy things, watch movies at the cinema, eat pizza, buy ice cream and so many other activities.

There are so many things to do and see at this mall.

So, if you are thinking of going to a fancy place to do some shopping and spend some time — Rupa’s Malls is your go-to place.

If shopping at Rupa’s mall is too much for you — go to the small shopping centers in town you will still get everything you need.

I may find it fun moving around the malls but it may not be the same case for you.

15. Explore the beautiful landscape.

Nandi county entrance sign

Eldoret still has so many beautiful places to visit and things to do.

You should take a trip to Iten or even Nandi county which is super close to Eldoret and explore the landscapes.

It’s up to you to decide where you want to go. There are a lot of viewpoints in Uasin Gishu County that you can visit.

One of them is the Iten viewpoint. The journey of just getting there is absolutely paradise.

The roads are lined up with trees and hills which makes the view even more catchy.

You can also take a trip to Nandi County, you won’t regret it — the areas are super green, and you will come across rivers and swamps.

This is a great way to connect with nature. Just a 30 minutes drive away from Eldoret and you can have all of that to yourself.

I have been lucky enough to explore Eldoret more than my hometown Mombasa.

I hope the guide I have shared will help you with your adventures in this beautiful county.

Lastly…

There are so many things to do in Eldoret apart from what I have shared in this article.

I have only written things that I have managed to do in Uasin Gishu county but there are more you can find.

There are other areas like Tiret, Mosoriot Gardens, Kapsimotwa Gardens and so many locations you can explore and find so many activities to do.

You just have to be ready to take yourself out of your comfort zone and explore this county.

As you are doing all these things don’t forget to respect the environment and people you will come across along the way.

Leave the places you visit clean and be nice to the locals.

It’s just not only about traveling but also about humanity.
